I try to make it to the Texas State Fair once a year to have a Corny Dog and otherwise participate in the "ooh rah Texas" culture that is inherent and pretty damn entertaining.
It seems that this year we picked a somewhat fortuitous day to visit the fair, as the very next morning 'Big Tex,' whom you may know is the 50' somewhat animatronic cowboy stature that has literally said howdy to visitors at the fair for the past 60 years, burned to the ground. I can't make any special claim at having some of the last photos of Tex as he is probably photographed tens of thousand of times a day, but many of the otherwise 'reluctant Texans' I know in Dallas are amusingly nostalgic about the 'death' of Tex.
I saw a picture of the work crew that was carting away the charred metal infrastructure (respectfully placed underneath a 'shroud') and the hulking, hard-hatted men disassembling him were nearly in tears. I also heard a news report that there was a large tour group of children in Big Tex circle as flames began to shoot out of his 75 gallon cowboy hat who all burst into tears en masse as everyone snapped photos.
Of course, within an hour the organizers of the fair announced that he will be re-built for next year "bigger and better" because this is Texas after all.

I had been meaning to go to the Dallas Arboretum's Chihuly exhibit essentially since it poened, and finally managed to get there yesterday on a gorgeous, windy, perfectly overcast day. (After months of summer in Texas, gloomy 80 degree fall days are refreshing.)
IN any case, though every one of the TEN THOUSAND (I exaggerate, but not by much) people there yesterday, and probably every day, have cameras, I'm sharing MY take on the exhibition.

So, I'm catching up on several month's worth of ignoring this blog, which means several past projects that I need to put up here.
One of the more interesting was working with Abstract Method Markting to throw Fasion's Living Canvas, and art and fashion event in Dallas. Notably, Jarrod from AM2 came up the concept of "a model's transformation into a work of art" and so we shot a teaser for the event highlighting said concept with the help of Dallas artist /model Toni Martin.

So the mead stash has running low lately, and given that summer is coming on, I determined that it was the right time to do something about that today (although yes, there are beetter things I could have been doing with my day...)
However, going through my usual method of going to the local super-grocer where I usually buy my bulk honey, I discovered to my annoyance that they had stopped stocking the 3 lb jars of honey I usually use. Not to be too deterred, I made sure I had at least a respectable stock by snagging a family of honeybears...

I found myself at the grocery today, which sometimes leads to the impulse buying of several pounds of honey, as was the case today. I kept it conservative today and just picked up 3 lbs, as I've had the rest of the pictured ingredients sitting around for months, with the intention of doing a small experiment batch of braggot.
A braggot, for those who don't know, is a mead made with added grain malt (like a beer wort) and sometimes, as in this case, with hops as well. I made a very small batch experiment (1 gal) once before, but that was simply adding some extra dark malt extract I had to a bit of my standard mead wort, and though it added a little complexity, it really didn't satisfy my curiosity about the potential of a braggot.
